Wood Species

CHERRY
Origin: Eastern North America
Hardness: Moderately hard, moderately heavy, stiff
Grade: Select
Characteristics: Fine to medium grain, nearly white to light red in color to dark reddish brown, exceptionally stable
Description: Expect heart and sap together on the face. Color variation, pitch pockets, pin knots and some mineral streaks are acceptable. Panels will have small and large stave pieces. Stains blend these variations together but in lighter finishes these variations can remain obvious. Cherry deepens in color quickly when exposed to light.

CHARACTER CHERRY
Origin: Eastern North America
Hardness: Moderately hard, moderately heavy, stiff
Grade: Rustic
Characteristics: Fine to medium grain, nearly white to light red in color to dark reddish brown, exceptionally stable
Description: With character cherry our raw cherry is hand-chosen to include color variations, sound large and small knots, pitch pockets, pin knots, mineral streaks, splits and other natural characteristics as defined by industry standards. Knots, imperfections, grain and color variations should be expected at random within door and drawer fronts. Quantity and frequency of the knots and desirable imperfections will vary from many to few.

SELECT CHERRY
Origin: Eastern North America
Hardness: Moderately hard, moderately heavy, stiff
Grade: Selected for grain and color match
Characteristics: Fine to medium grain, light red in color, exceptionally stable
Description: With Cherry Select our raw cherry is hand-chosen to minimize color variation, pitch pockets, pin knots and mineral streaks. This results in doors and drawer fronts with very even color and grain. Panels will have larger stave pieces that are hand selected for color and grain match. Expect heart wood on face with some sap wood on backs. Cherry deepens in color quickly when exposed to light.

WALNUT
Origin: Eastern North America
Hardness: Tough hardwood with a medium density
Grade: Select
Characteristics: Generally straight-grained though sometimes wavy or curly grain. Creamy white light brown to dark chocolate brown.
Description: Walnut is hand selected to minimize color variations, pitch pockets, and pin knots. Panels will have larger stave pieces that are hand-selected for color and grain match. Expect sap wood, some pitch pockets and pin knots on the face with more on the backs. Darker stains blend these variations and characteristics together but, in lighter stains, these variations can remain obvious, giving a more natural look. Walnut lightens in color when exposed to light.
MAPLE
Origin: Northeastern North America
Hardness: Heavy, strong, stiff
Grade: Select
Characteristics: Fine, uniform grain, nearly white to slightly reddish brown
Description: Maple accepts penetrating stains in varying degrees. Different wood pieces and often the same piece can have areas of inconsistent penetration. This is a natural characteristic that should be considered desirable when ordering stained maple. Mineral streaks are common maple characteristics that are not entirely eliminated when selecting wood for cabinetry. Maple will deepen in color when exposed to natural light.
CHARACTER MAPLE
Origin: Northeastern North America
Hardness: Heavy, strong, stiff
Grade: Rustic
Characteristics: Fine grain, white and reddish brown
Description: Character maple pieces are hand-chosen to include color variations from nearly white to dark brown. Sharply contrasting grain and color variations between cabinet components should be expected. Cabinet components will also include sound large and small knots, bark pockets, pin knots, mineral streaks and other natural characteristics as defined by industry standards. Knots, imperfections, grain and color variations should be expected at random within door and drawer fronts. Quality and frequency of the knots and desirable imperfections will vary from many to few.
KNOTTY ALDER
Origin: Coastal Western North America
Hardness: Moderately soft
Grade: Premium rustic
Characteristics: Fine grain, white and reddish brown
Description: Raw knotty alder pieces can include solid knots, crater knots, open knots, soft knots, pin knots, sapwood, worm holes, worm tracking, bird pecks and other natural characteristics as defined by industry standards. Knots and defects should be expected at random with door and drawer fronts. Quantity and frequency of defects and knots will vary from many to few. Alder tends to lighten in color when exposed to natural light.
CLEAR ALDER
Origin: Coastal Western North America
Hardness: Moderately soft
Grade: Superior
Characteristics: Fine grain, white and reddish brown
Description: Straight grain wood with natural coloring from pale yellow to reddish brown. Pitch pockets, pin knots and occasional tight knots are acceptable. Expect panels to have smaller wood stave pieces. Stains blend natural wood color variations together well, but in lighter color finishes.

Grade: Select, pre-dominantly flat sawn, occasional rift and quarter sawn
Characteristics: Fine grain, white and reddish brown
Description: Character White Oak is hand selected to include color variations, sound large and small knots, splits and other natural characteristics as defined by industry standards.
